About Us

Bar LA Ranch is a small family cow-calf operation run by Colin and Lauren Akins. We are based in the beautiful foothills of Southern Alberta on land that has been in the Akins family for over 40 years.

In 2017, we purchased land from the Akins ranch and are proud to carry on the family tradition of raising happy, healthy, all natural grass-fed beef cattle for a fourth generation.

What makes us unique is that we not only offer "farm to fork", we offer "conception to consumer".

About the Cattle

We wouldn't be here without our red Angus cattle!

The Angus breed has been in Canada since 1860 and are exceptionally hardy cattle well known for producing high quality well-marbled beef.

We breed exclusively to premium red Angus bulls purchased from several reputable ranches in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. Our growing herd of predominantly red Angus cows calve out in the late spring and are rotated through the native prairie pastures on our ranch until late fall. Calves are weaned onto high quality homegrown hay and are allowed to develop slowly over the winter months until they are ready for processing between 18-24 months of age.

All of our animals are raised from birth right here on the ranch where they  graze our native grass pastures producing a very tender and flavourful meat. Grass-fed beef has a different aroma, and a richer, more complex flavour than conventional, grain-fed beef. This is due to the multitude of vitamins, nutrients and minerals packed inside, and is the main reason grass-fed beef is becoming more in demand at home and many upscale restaurants.

We take great pride and care in our operation and welcome anyone interested in seeing how our animals are raised to come out and visit the ranch!
